Plenty of famous musicians have a sibling who sings. Few have one whose voice sounds almost exactly like theirs. Vaughn Anthony Stephens, who performs as Vaughn Anthony, is John Legend’s younger brother. For a few years in the late 2000s and early 2010s, he was being prepared as the next R&B voice from the Stephens family of Springfield, Ohio.

His story isn’t a straightforward rise to fame. It’s about talent, family loyalty, record-label setbacks, and the challenge of building your own career when your voice keeps reminding people of someone else. This article sets out what’s verified, and points out where popular biography sites get it wrong.

    Who Is Vaughn Anthony Stephens?

Vaughn Anthony Stephens is an American R&B singer and songwriter from Springfield, Ohio. He was born Vaughn Stephens, and he grew up singing songs by D’Angelo, Rahsaan Patterson, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye. He later dropped the family surname professionally and became Vaughn Anthony.

He’s best known as John Legend’s brother and as the second artist Legend signed to his own label, HomeSchool Records.

A note on bad information: Several biography sites mix him up with his older brother, Ronald Stephens II. Some list a 1984 birth date or a debut album that no reliable outlet has documented. Contemporary reporting points the other way. Billboard described him as 28 in a 2009 article, and the Springfield News-Sun put him at 30 a few years later. That suggests he was born around 1980 or 1981, though his exact birth date has never been confirmed in reliable press.

    Vaughn Anthony Stephens’ Family Background

    Parents: Ronald and Phyllis Stephens

Vaughn grew up in a musical household. His father, Ronald Stephens, worked in a factory and played drums. His mother, Phyllis, was a seamstress who sang and directed the church choir. Vaughn’s own bio says he was briefly homeschooled by his parents and that he valued the experience. John Legend was homeschooled too, which makes the name of John’s later label, HomeSchool Records, a nice family reference.

Family life wasn’t always easy. Ronald and Phyllis divorced when the kids were young, remarried about a decade later, and then divorced again. John Legend has written publicly about watching his mother struggle with drug addiction for more than a decade after his grandmother’s death, and about how deeply it affected the whole family. He and his mother later reconciled.

    Siblings

Vaughn is one of four Stephens children. His siblings are Ronald Stephens II, John (John Legend), and Phyllis “Missy” Stephens. John is the second of the four, born John Roger Stephens. Very little has been published about Ronald or Missy.

    Wife and Children

Vaughn keeps his own household out of the public eye. A Springfield News-Sun profile from the early 2010s reported that he lived in a modest brick house in Springfield with his wife of more than a decade and their children, and that he was a father of four at the age of 30.

His wife’s name and his children’s names have not been published by reliable sources, and this article doesn’t guess at them.

Through John: Chrissy Teigen and the Legend Children

Through his brother, Vaughn is brother-in-law to model and TV personality Chrissy Teigen. John and Chrissy married in 2013 and have four children: Luna, Miles, Esti, and Wren. Those children are Vaughn’s nieces and nephews.

    Vaughn Anthony’s Music Career

    A Late Start

Vaughn didn’t grow up planning to be a professional singer. As a young man he was more interested in sports and acting. The turning point came in 2004, when he played Smokey Robinson in a local production of the musical From Motown to Gospel. The audience’s reaction convinced him to pursue music. In his words, having John Legend as a brother made it a little easier to break in than it would be for most newcomers.

    Background Singer, Then HomeSchool Records

Vaughn served a real apprenticeship. He spent about three years as one of Legend’s backup singers before getting opening slots on Legend’s tours in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. In November 2007, Legend officially signed him to HomeSchool Records, just weeks after announcing the label’s first signing, British singer Estelle.

Two iTunes EPs followed: Mr. Everything (six songs, 2008) and The Future (five songs, 2009). A full-length debut was planned around the single “In Your Shoes,” which he co-wrote with his brother. Legend co-wrote four songs with him in total.

    The 2009 S.O.B.’s Showcase

The most visible moment of Vaughn’s career came on May 14, 2009. Legend hosted a showcase at S.O.B.’s, a well-known New York club, for industry executives, with the aim of landing a distribution deal for his brother’s album. Vaughn performed seven songs. Legend and Estelle sang their duet “Come Over,” and Rick Ross joined Legend on “Magnificent.” Ross also praised Legend from the stage.

That distribution deal is the key detail. HomeSchool didn’t press or distribute physical albums itself. It relied on outside partners. Without a distributor, Vaughn’s debut album stayed on the shelf.

Leaving the Label and Going Independent

Eventually Vaughn and HomeSchool parted ways. He described the split as mutual and said he loved his brother just the same. He also told the News-Sun that he had spent years trying to win over record executives who felt he sounded too much like Legend.

He then took his music directly to listeners online. He released “Curiosity” and “Hold Me Down,” a duet with John, and in 2012 prepared a mixtape called Life of a Player. The mixtape featured Rick Ross, Olivia, and Prodigy of Mobb Deep. According to the News-Sun, he had around 150 finished songs ready to release.

    Collaborations and Tours

Vaughn’s résumé is more substantial than many people realize. He opened for Robin Thicke, India.Arie, Raphael Saadiq, and Estelle. He recorded “It’s Alright” with Rick Ross and “Paragraphs of Love” with Ghostface Killah. Estelle also appears on the Ghostface track. He also appeared as a guest on tracks by The Kid Daytona and Crooked I.

    Important Public Moments

    • 2004: Plays Smokey Robinson in a local production of From Motown to Gospel. This is the moment he decides to sing professionally.
    • November 2007: Signs to John Legend’s HomeSchool Records as the label’s second artist.
    • 2008–2009: Releases the Mr. Everything and The Future EPs, and opens solo on Legend’s tour.
    • May 14, 2009: Performs at the S.O.B.’s industry showcase in New York.
    • Early 2010s: Leaves HomeSchool, releases “Hold Me Down” with John, and puts out the Life of a Player mixtape.
    • Same period: Auditions unsuccessfully for NBC’s The Voice. Years later, his brother would become a coach on that same show.

The Personal Side of the Story

The most revealing parts of Vaughn’s story are the moments of honesty. He has said the comparisons with his brother used to bother him, and that he no longer lets them. He pointed out that the two of them look different and dress differently, and that he’s the one with tattoos.

The setbacks were real. The label split, together with the failed Voice audition, led to what he described as a period of reflection and “spiritual cleaning.” He stayed active in his hometown during that time, singing the national anthem at Wittenberg University basketball games and performing at a new local hospital. He’s a graduate of North High School in Springfield.

His father described the family dilemma well. Ron Stephens said that the genetics of Vaughn’s voice were simply family, but that his success “has to be his success.”

It’s also worth noting what John told him about the business. Vaughn recalled being advised to treat music as a job and a business, and never to act like a fool, if he wanted a long career.

    Recent Public Visibility

After the burst of releases and press in the early 2010s, mainstream coverage of Vaughn Anthony largely stopped. There’s no reliable recent reporting on a major-label album, a tour, or a public role in his brother’s projects. Some fan sites say he stays active on Instagram, but those sites aren’t authoritative. If you see claims about his current net worth, age, or new albums, check them against a named source first.
